Guiding Question 1

No matter what the community, will there always be leaders and followers? Is the communist dream of true equality simply impossible? Give reasons for your answer and, if you can, examples from literature and life.

We absolutely agree that there will always be leaders and followers in a community. To be defined as a leader, there must always be followers. A leader is always followed by the majority of the people. No, the communist dream of true equality is simply impossible because of the greedy nature of human beings. The “real” communism always has a temporary leader in order to achieve communism. However, the leader results in a tyrant. For instance, the current North Korean ruler, Kim Jong-il, does not allow true equality for the citizens of the country. There is a lack of freedom and individual rights in North Korea. Moreover, in the novella Animal Farm, Napoleon is the dictator. He does not grant true equality among the animals on the farm and the pigs often dominates.

Yes, there will always be leaders and followers in a community. It is part of human nature to either lead or follow a group. We believe that it is practically impossible to have a completely communist society due to every human's uniqueness. No one is the same in every way; people are of different races, genders, strength, and intellectual abilities. We feel that people would never be able to accomplish total equality in a community due to these differences but we do not wish to abolish the idea that it could be possible.

We agree to the previous answer. We believe that there are always leaders to give ideas for followers to follow. Yes, the communist dream of true equality is impossible. This is because not everyone will agree with each other due to their different thoughts and perspectives. It is natural for humans and animals to be greedy and lazy. In the novel, Napoleon was the communist leader. The followers were the animals. In the end, his communist dream of true equality did not work. The commandment "All animals are equal" was changed to "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".

We agree with the two previous answers. We think that there will always be leaders and followers. We agree with the first group when they said that it is practically impossible to have a completely communist society due to human's uniqueness. It is not only very difficult to make everyone equal, but it is simply unfair. We also agree with the second group with their relation to Animal Farm. The commandment "All animals are equal" was changed to "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others". We really thought that this was a really good example of changes that can happen. A communist society is very hard because it is not in human behavior to be completely equal. Some people are more greedy and want power. An example of this is Stalin.

Yes, I agree with all the comments made above. Yet, there will be more individuality through communism which would minimize the role of a leader. The communist's dream cannot be accomplished, yet an essence of this may be achieved. It all depends on the society of people you are working with. If everyone is co-operative and a majority agree with this theory of communism, there will be a minor focus on leaders once communism is achieved. Nevertheless, there needs to be a leader to get them to that stage. Therefore, I believe that the communist's dream cannot be achieved, yet an essence may be reflected on a society.
